Role - Senior Ecologist
Location – Birmingham
Salary - £DOE

Our client, an established and award-winning environmental design consultancy is looking to appoint a Senior Ecologist to join its growing in-house ecology team in Birmingham.
Working alongside Landscape Architects, Urban Designers and fellow Ecologists, this is an opportunity to become part of a genuinely integrated practice where ecology and biodiversity are considered from the very earliest stages of the design and planning process.
The consultancy works across a diverse portfolio of projects throughout the UK, including large-scale residential developments, new settlements, regeneration schemes and major strategic sites. Rather than ecology operating as a standalone service, the team works collaboratively with designers and clients to ensure biodiversity is embedded within projects from the outset.
As a Senior Ecologist, you will take responsibility for your own projects while supporting the wider ecology team and contributing technical expertise across a varied workload.

THE SENIOR ECOLOGIST ROLE WILL INCLUDE
  • Managing ecology projects from initial survey and assessment through to planning and delivery
  • Undertaking and overseeing Preliminary Ecological Appraisals and protected species surveys
  • Preparing Ecological Impact Assessments and technical reports
  • Providing ecological input into planning applications and Environmental Statements
  • Supporting Biodiversity Net Gain assessments and habitat enhancement strategies
  • Developing mitigation, compensation and habitat management proposals
  • Liaising directly with clients, planning authorities and multidisciplinary project teams
  • Coordinating fieldwork and supporting more junior members of the ecology team
  • Working closely with Landscape Architects to integrate ecological recommendations into the design process
  • Helping to manage project programmes, budgets and resources

The successful candidate will already have good consultancy experience and be comfortable managing projects with increasing independence. Strong report writing, client communication and project management skills will be important, alongside a sound understanding of UK wildlife legislation, planning policy and current ecological best practice.
Experience with protected species licensing and Biodiversity Net Gain would be particularly beneficial, as would membership of CIEEM.
This is an excellent opportunity for an Ecologist looking to progress within a multidisciplinary consultancy where landscape, ecology and biodiversity genuinely work together rather than operating as separate disciplines.
