
Role – Senior Ecologist
Salary – £DOE
Location – South East/Remote
Our client, a friendly, forward-thinking environmental consultancy is looking for a senior ecologist to join its small but ambitious team. This is a role for someone who enjoys a balance of project management and hands-on fieldwork, helping a mix of clients work their way through planning and development stages They’d love to find someone based in the South East (or nearby) who’s happy working from home but doesn’t mind getting out for surveys and site visits when needed.
The work is varied, from habitat surveys and protected species checks to bat assessments, report writing, and coordinating trusted subcontractors. Projects often have a heritage twist, linking in with historic building work, as well as crossovers with their landscape, planning, and archaeology teams. Most jobs are in London, the Home Counties, and the Midlands, but every now and then there’s a trip further afield. There’s no office base, but the team gets together a few times a year in London for meetings and socials.
WHAT YOU´LL BE DOING
- Taking the lead on ecology projects, from surveys to final reports
- Carrying out (and overseeing) a range of fieldwork, with a strong focus on bats
- Producing clear, high-quality reports and ensuring everything meets industry standards
- Keeping projects compliant with environmental legislation and planning rules
- Growing and maintaining a network of ecology subcontractors
- Building great relationships with clients and offering straightforward, practical advice
- Helping out with business development, tender writing, and marketing ideas
QUALIFICATIONS AND KEY SKILLS REQUIRED
- Degree in ecology, environmental science, or similar.
- CIEEM membership
- Bat licence (Level 2 preferred, Level 1 considered if working towards Level 2)
- Good all-round survey skills, especially for bats, habitat surveys, and BNG
- Solid understanding of UK wildlife law and environmental good practice
- At least three years’ consultancy experience, with proven project management ability
- Full UK driving licence and the right to work in the UK
DESIRABLE
- Named ecologist on bat EPS licences
- Botanical skills
- GIS know-how (training available)
- Postgrad degree is a bonus but not essential
